The S.L.A.M. Playbook Project: Introduction

Welcome to the S.L.A.M. Playbook Project!

S.L.A.M. stands for Sports in Literature, Among Adolescents, and in Media and is a high school English class that I’m creating.

The playbook is the blueprint of what the course will look like. I’m planning on sharing out resources and takeaways, the timeline of developing the course, and exploring sports culture, so its an ongoing project that I’ve very excited about.

My inspiration to create a course comes from the work that Alan Brown and Luke Rodesiler have been doing over the years with The Intersection of Literacy, Sport, Culture, and Society roundtable sessions at National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Conventions. I have been able to present on these roundtables since 2018. Through the roundtables, I’ve learned from educators across the country engaged in bringing sports culture into their English courses at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education levels.

One thing I’m not looking to do with this project is find out all I can about sports because that is an impossible task. I am looking to become more knowledgeable in creating a course that students enjoy taking where their knowledge of sports is valued, they can connect with other sports-minded students, and they are able to explore sports in a wide variety of contexts, while also working on their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
