Poem of the Day for April 8, 2024: “Eclipse” by George Roger Waters

April is National Poetry Month! I’m celebrating National Poetry Month in my classroom with a Poem of the Day. Each day I’m sharing the poems my students and I read, along with prompts, resources, and reflection.

Share your thinking about George Roger Waters’s piece from Dark Side of the Moon (1973) by annotating and/or responding to one of the prompts.

  • How does the piece connect to you / your life? Why? How?
  • Is this an actual poem? Why or why not?
  • Which line do you believe is the most powerful? Why?

Here is a copy of the Poem of the Day that students received. If you would like to modify the Google Docs, go to File > Make a Copy. I do not respond to Share requests.

With the 2024 Total Eclipse taking place today, I had to do a poem about it. Otherwise it would have been a missed opportunity!

I looked through a few moon-related poems. To be frank, they were not very good for the occasion. I remembered that a lot of my students noted in their Poetry Prompts that “music” came to mind when they thought about poetry, especially with the similarities between the two. I decided to do one of my favorite eclipse-related songs – “Eclipse” by Pink Floyd!

After a bit of research, I found that Roger Waters’s first name is George and that he is still alive! The still alive part is key because all of the poems covered in Poem of the Day are from living poets.

After students had an opportunity to read the poem and respond to one of the prompts, I revealed to them that this was not a poem, but a song on a Pink Floyd album. More students had heard of Pink Floyd than Roger Waters. We then watched this lyric video of “Eclipse” that also had an animation of an eclipse.
