Poem of the Day for April 5, 2024: “Mermaid Song” by Kim Addonizio

April is National Poetry Month! I’m celebrating National Poetry Month in my classroom with a Poem of the Day. Each day I’m sharing the poems my students and I read, along with prompts, resources, and reflection.

Share your thinking about Kim Addonizio’s poem from Tell Me (2000) by annotating the poem and/or responding to one of the prompts.

  • How does the poem connect to you / your life? Why? How?
  • What do you think about the poem? Why?
  • Which line do you believe is the most powerful? Why?

Here is a copy of the Poem of the Day that students received. If you would like to modify the Google Docs, go to File > Make a Copy. I do not respond to Share requests.

“Mermaid Song” threw the students for a loop who were utilizing the strategy we used yesterday with “Apples” but not as much as “Apples” did.

In class discussions we talked about what kind of love was shared in the poem, personal memories associated with lines and words in the poem, and fish/aquatic imagery used by the author.

Overall, I enjoyed dissecting this poem with students as we continue along with Poem of the Day.
