Poem of the Day for April 2, 2024: “Museum” by Rudy Francisco

April is National Poetry Month! I’m celebrating National Poetry Month in my classroom with a Poem of the Day. Each day I’m sharing the poems my students and I read, along with prompts, resources, and reflection.

Share your thinking about this poem from Rudy Francisco’s 2017 book Helium by annotating the poem and/or responding to one of the prompts.

  • What do you think about the poem? Why?
  • Which line do you believe is the most powerful? Why?

Here is a copy of the Poem of the Day that students received. If you would like to modify the Google Docs, go to File > Make a Copy. I do not respond to Share requests.

After reading Helium by Rudy Francisco in February, I combed through the pages a few more times and snagged poems that I thought would work well with other texts I teach and for Poem of the Day.

I thought this was a good poem to start the month off with. A lot of my students noted in their poetry prompts from yesterday that when “poetry” is mentioned they think of rhyming and simple phrasing. “Museum” is different with both elements, which I hope helps my them see what else poetry can be.
